Jeremiah 44-48
Jeremiah Chapter 44
1The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews who lived in the land of Egypt, who lived at Migdol, and at Tahpanhes, and at Memphis, and in the country of Pathros, saying, 2âThe LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: âYou have seen all the evil that I have brought on Jerusalem, and on all the cities of Judah. Behold, today they are a desolation, and no man dwells in them, 3because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, to serve other gods that they didnât know, neither they, nor you, nor your fathers. 4However I sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, âOh, donât do this abominable thing that I hate.â 5But they didnât listen and didnât incline their ear. They didnât turn from their wickedness, to stop burning incense to other gods. 6Therefore my wrath and my anger was poured out, and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are wasted and desolate, as it is today.â 7âTherefore now the LORD, the God of Armies, the God of Israel, says: âWhy do you commit great evil against your own souls, to cut off from yourselves man and woman, infant and nursing child out of the middle of Judah, to leave yourselves no one remaining, 8in that you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have gone to live, that you may be cut off, and that you may be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth? 9Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, the wickedness of the kings of Judah, the wickedness of their wives, your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 10They are not humbled even to this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers.â 11âTherefore the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: âBehold, I will set my face against you for evil, even to cut off all Judah. 12I will take the remnant of Judah that have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to live there, and they will all be consumed. They will fall in the land of Egypt. They will be consumed by the sword and by the famine. They will die, from the least even to the greatest, by the sword and by the famine. They will be an object of horror, an astonishment, a curse, and a reproach. 13For I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; 14so that none of the remnant of Judah, who have gone into the land of Egypt to live there, will escape or be left to return into the land of Judah, to which they have a desire to return to dwell there; for no one will return except those who will escape.â â 15Then all the men who knew that their wives burned incense to other gods, and all the women who stood by, a great assembly, even all the people who lived in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying, 16âAs for the word that you have spoken to us in the LORDâs name, we will not listen to you. 17But we will certainly perform every word that has gone out of our mouth, to burn incense to the queen of the sky and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then we had plenty of food, and were well, and saw no evil. 18But since we stopped burning incense to the queen of the sky, and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.â 19The women said, âWhen we burned incense to the queen of the sky and poured out drink offerings to her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings to her, without our husbands?â 20Then Jeremiah said to all the peopleâto the men and to the women, even to all the people who had given him an answer, saying, 21âThe incense that you burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your princes, and the people of the land, didnât the LORD remember them, and didnât it come into his mind? 22Thus the LORD could no longer bear it, because of the evil of your doings and because of the abominations which you have committed. Therefore your land has become a desolation, an astonishment, and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is today. 23Because you have burned incense and because you have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed the LORDâs voice, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his testimonies; therefore this evil has happened to you, as it is today.â 24Moreover Jeremiah said to all the people, including all the women, âHear the LORDâs word, all Judah who are in the land of Egypt! 25The LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says, âYou and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and with your hands have fulfilled it, saying, âWe will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of the sky, and to pour out drink offerings to her.â â âEstablish then your vows, and perform your vows.â 26âTherefore hear the LORDâs word, all Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: âBehold, I have sworn by my great name,â says the LORD, âthat my name will no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, âAs the Lord GOD lives.â 27Behold, I watch over them for evil, and not for good; and all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt will be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until they are all gone. 28Those who escape the sword will return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah few in number. All the remnant of Judah, who have gone into the land of Egypt to live there, will know whose word will stand, mine or theirs. 29â âThis will be the sign to you,â says the LORD, âthat I will punish you in this place, that you may know that my words will surely stand against you for evil.â 30The LORD says, âBehold, I will give Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies and into the hand of those who seek his life, just as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who was his enemy and sought his life.â â
Jeremiah Chapter 45
1The message that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch the son of Neriah, when he wrote these words in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying, 2âThe LORD, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch: 3âYou said, âWoe is me now! For the LORD has added sorrow to my pain! I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest.â â 4âYou shall tell him, the LORD says: âBehold, that which I have built, I will break down, and that which I have planted I will pluck up; and this in the whole land. 5Do you seek great things for yourself? Donât seek them; for, behold, I will bring evil on all flesh,â says the LORD, âbut I will let you escape with your life wherever you go.â â
Jeremiah Chapter 46
1The LORDâs word which came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations. 2Of Egypt: concerning the army of Pharaoh Necoh king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon struck in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah. 3âPrepare the buckler and shield, and draw near to battle! 4Harness the horses, and get up, you horsemen, and stand up with your helmets. Polish the spears, put on the coats of mail. 5Why have I seen it? They are dismayed and are turned backward. Their mighty ones are beaten down, have fled in haste, and donât look back. Terror is on every side,â says the LORD. 6âDonât let the swift flee away, nor the mighty man escape. In the north by the river Euphrates they have stumbled and fallen. 7âWho is this who rises up like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge? 8Egypt rises up like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge. He says, âI will rise up. I will cover the earth. I will destroy cities and its inhabitants.â 9Go up, you horses! Rage, you chariots! Let the mighty men go out: Cush and Put, who handle the shield; and the Ludim, who handle and bend the bow. 10For that day is of the Lord, GOD of Armies, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge himself of his adversaries. The sword will devour and be satiated, and will drink its fill of their blood; for the Lord, GOD of Armies, has a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates. 11Go up into Gilead, and take balm, virgin daughter of Egypt. You use many medicines in vain. There is no healing for you. 12The nations have heard of your shame, and the earth is full of your cry; for the mighty man has stumbled against the mighty, they both fall together.â 13The word that the LORD spoke to Jeremiah the prophet, how that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon should come and strike the land of Egypt: 14âDeclare in Egypt, publish in Migdol, and publish in Memphis and in Tahpanhes; say, âStand up, and prepare, for the sword has devoured around you.â 15Why are your strong ones swept away? They didnât stand, because the LORD pushed them. 16He made many to stumble. Yes, they fell on one another. They said, âArise! Letâs go again to our own people, and to the land of our birth, from the oppressing sword.â 17They cried there, âPharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise; he has let the appointed time pass by.â 18âAs I live,â says the King, whose name is the LORD of Armies, âsurely like Tabor among the mountains, and like Carmel by the sea, so he will come. 19You daughter who dwells in Egypt, furnish yourself to go into captivity; for Memphis will become a desolation, and will be burned up, without inhabitant. 20âEgypt is a very beautiful heifer; but destruction out of the north has come. It has come. 21Also her hired men in the middle of her are like calves of the stall, for they also are turned back. They have fled away together. They didnât stand, for the day of their calamity has come on them, the time of their visitation. 22Its sound will go like the serpent, for they will march with an army, and come against her with axes, as wood cutters. 23They will cut down her forest,â says the LORD, âthough it canât be searched; because they are more than the locusts, and are innumerable. 24The daughter of Egypt will be disappointed; she will be delivered into the hand of the people of the north.â 25The LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: âBehold, I will punish Amon of No, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with her gods and her kings, even Pharaoh, and those who trust in him. 26I will deliver them into the hand of those who seek their lives, and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of his servants. Afterwards it will be inhabited, as in the days of old,â says the LORD. 27âBut donât you be afraid, Jacob my servant. Donât be dismayed, Israel; for, behold, I will save you from afar, and your offspring from the land of their captivity. Jacob will return, and will be quiet and at ease. No one will make him afraid. 28Donât be afraid, O Jacob my servant,â says the LORD, âfor I am with you; for I will make a full end of all the nations where I have driven you, but I will not make a full end of you, but I will correct you in measure, and will in no way leave you unpunished.â
Jeremiah Chapter 47
1The LORDâs word that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh struck Gaza. 2The LORD says: âBehold, waters rise up out of the north, and will become an overflowing stream, and will overflow the land and all that is therein, the city and those who dwell therein. The men will cry, and all the inhabitants of the land will wail. 3At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong ones, at the rushing of his chariots, at the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers donât look back for their children because their hands are so feeble, 4because of the day that comes to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every helper who remains; for the LORD will destroy the Philistines, the remnant of the isle of Caphtor. 5Baldness has come on Gaza; Ashkelon is brought to nothing. You remnant of their valley, how long will you cut yourself? 6â âYou sword of the LORD, how long will it be before you are quiet? Put yourself back into your scabbard; rest, and be still.â 7âHow can you be quiet, since the LORD has given you a command? Against Ashkelon, and against the seashore, there he has appointed it.â
Jeremiah Chapter 48
1Of Moab. The LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: âWoe to Nebo! For it is laid waste. Kiriathaim is disappointed. It is taken. Misgab is put to shame and broken down. 2The praise of Moab is no more. In Heshbon they have devised evil against her: âCome! Letâs cut her off from being a nation.â You also, Madmen, will be brought to silence. The sword will pursue you. 3The sound of a cry from Horonaim, desolation and great destruction! 4Moab is destroyed. Her little ones have caused a cry to be heard. 5For they will go up by the ascent of Luhith with continual weeping. For at the descent of Horonaim they have heard the distress of the cry of destruction. 6Flee! Save your lives! Be like the juniper bush in the wilderness. 7For, because you have trusted in your works and in your treasures, you also will be taken. Chemosh will go out into captivity, his priests and his princes together. 8The destroyer will come on every city, and no city will escape; the valley also will perish, and the plain will be destroyed, as the LORD has spoken. 9Give wings to Moab, that she may fly and get herself away: and her cities will become a desolation, without anyone to dwell in them. 10âCursed is he who does the work of the LORD negligently; and cursed is he who keeps back his sword from blood. 11âMoab has been at ease from his youth, and he has settled on his dregs, and has not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither has he gone into captivity; therefore his taste remains in him, and his scent is not changed. 12Therefore behold, the days come,â says the LORD, âthat I will send to him those who pour off, and they will pour him off; and they will empty his vessels, and break their containers in pieces. 13Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their confidence. 14âHow do you say, âWe are mighty men, and valiant men for the warâ? 15Moab is laid waste, and they have gone up into his cities, and his chosen young men have gone down to the slaughter,â says the King, whose name is the LORD of Armies. 16âThe calamity of Moab is near to come, and his affliction hurries fast. 17All you who are around him, bemoan him; and all you who know his name, say, âHow the strong staff is broken, the beautiful rod!â 18âYou daughter who dwells in Dibon, come down from your glory, and sit in thirst; for the destroyer of Moab has come up against you. He has destroyed your strongholds. 19Inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way and watch. Ask him who flees, and her who escapes; say, âWhat has been done?â 20Moab is disappointed; for it is broken down. Wail and cry! Tell it by the Arnon, that Moab is laid waste. 21Judgment has come on the plain countryâ on Holon, on Jahzah, on Mephaath, 22on Dibon, on Nebo, on Beth Diblathaim, 23on Kiriathaim, on Beth Gamul, on Beth Meon, 24on Kerioth, on Bozrah, and on all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near. 25The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken,â says the LORD. 26âMake him drunk, for he magnified himself against the LORD. Moab will wallow in his vomit, and he also will be in derision. 27For wasnât Israel a derision to you? Was he found among thieves? For as often as you speak of him, you shake your head. 28You inhabitants of Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock. Be like the dove that makes her nest over the mouth of the abyss. 29âWe have heard of the pride of Moab. He is very proud in his loftiness, his pride, his arrogance, and the arrogance of his heart. 30I know his wrath,â says the LORD, âthat it is nothing; his boastings have done nothing. 31Therefore I will wail for Moab. Yes, I will cry out for all Moab. They will mourn for the men of Kir Heres. 32With more than the weeping of Jazer I will weep for you, vine of Sibmah. Your branches passed over the sea. They reached even to the sea of Jazer. The destroyer has fallen on your summer fruits and on your vintage. 33Gladness and joy is taken away from the fruitful field and from the land of Moab. I have caused wine to cease from the wine presses. No one will tread with shouting. The shouting will be no shouting. 34From the cry of Heshbon even to Elealeh, even to Jahaz they have uttered their voice, from Zoar even to Horonaim, to Eglath Shelishiyah; for the waters of Nimrim will also become desolate. 35Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab,â says the LORD, âhim who offers in the high place, and him who burns incense to his gods. 36Therefore my heart sounds for Moab like flutes, and my heart sounds like flutes for the men of Kir Heres. Therefore the abundance that he has gotten has perished. 37For every head is bald, and every beard clipped. There are cuttings on all the hands, and sackcloth on the waist. 38On all the housetops of Moab, and in its streets, there is lamentation everywhere; for I have broken Moab like a vessel in which no one delights,â says the LORD. 39âHow it is broken down! How they wail! How Moab has turned the back with shame! So will Moab become a derision and a terror to all who are around him.â 40For the LORD says: âBehold, he will fly as an eagle, and will spread out his wings against Moab. 41Kerioth is taken, and the strongholds are seized. The heart of the mighty men of Moab at that day will be as the heart of a woman in her pangs. 42Moab will be destroyed from being a people, because he has magnified himself against the LORD. 43Terror, the pit, and the snare are on you, inhabitant of Moab,â says the LORD. 44âHe who flees from the terror will fall into the pit; and he who gets up out of the pit will be taken in the snare, for I will bring on him, even on Moab, the year of their visitation,â says the LORD. 45âThose who fled stand without strength under the shadow of Heshbon; for a fire has gone out of Heshbon, and a flame from the middle of Sihon, and has devoured the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones. 46Woe to you, O Moab! The people of Chemosh are undone; for your sons are taken away captive, and your daughters into captivity. 47âYet I will reverse the captivity of Moab in the latter days,â says the LORD. Thus far is the judgment of Moab.
